Do you work for money? you work for money..! Money for doing work..

So you think that money is the root of all evil?"

"Have you ever asked what is the root of money? Money is a tool of exchange, which can't exist unless there are goods produced and men able to produce them. Money is the material shape of the principle that men who wish to deal with one another must deal by trade and give value for value. Money is not the tool of the moochers, who claim your product by tears, or of the looters, who take it from you by force. Money is made possible only by the men who produce. Is this what you consider evil?
 Do you work for money?

It's a trick question, but it's also the most important question you'll only have to answer - once.

For the few who work because they love their job, or work for a cause, there's the rest of us - people like you and me, who work for money.

But self-help books and motivational seminars sometimes make us forget this reality. That we are employed, first and foremost, not because we want to make people happy, or create a brilliant product, but because we want to sustain ourselves.

Productivity and satisfaction come AFTER you've got the job - not before. Their motive force gets blurred out when you realize your original reason for getting a job - you've got to pay the damn bills!

So, you work for…?

Money.

Um, no. I wanted to know which company you work for

Exactly - I work for the company of money.

This is my money mantra, a dialogue I have with myself any time I have to coldly spell out any terms and conditions that deal with money.

It could be a raise, negotiating salary or plain-old setting down a figure on paper that I'm willing to work for. It helps me stay sane and focused every time I compare yourself to another employee's salary, every time I ask for a raise, every time I ask for a bonus, every time I can't decide to take a better job because of company loyalties, I ask myself - do I deserve more money? If I do - then there's no guilt.

There could be external guilt - the idea of being labelled greedy. What is greed? It's the selfish, intense desire for something. A corporation needs greed - it's most important goal is to generate profit. A company is loyal to it's profit. Why shouldn't you be?

And your desire for money is also your drive. When you show your desire for money, never forget that you're also showing your desire for growth, expansion. This is your response any time anyone tries to guilt you into settling for less.

"Run for your life from any man who tells you that money is evil. That sentence is the leper's bell of an approaching looter."
