Gerard ButlerGerard Butler and Sam Worthington? Sounds like a winning combo to me. Variety's reporting Gerard Butler is in talks to star in the thriller Hunter Killer, based on the upcoming novel Firing Point by George Wallace and Don Keith, with Sam Worthington also being considered for a role in the project. Set up at Relativity Media, Hunter Killer will be directed by Antoine Fuqua (taking over after Phillip Noyce exited the film). Jamie Moss, Arne Schmidt and John Kolvenbach adapted the novel for the screen.
If the deals go through, Butler would play an inexperienced submarine captain who works with a Navy SEAL team (led by Worthington's character) to rescue a kidnapped Russian president and stop a rogue Russian general from starting World War III.
Filming is likely to begin this winter with Relativity aiming for a December 21, 2012 release.
Butler's currently in theaters starring in Machine Gun Preacher, based on a true inspirational story and directed by Marc Forster. He recently finished up work on the romantic comedy Playing the Field and has the surfing film Of Men and Mavericks (I'm still not in love with that title) up next. Worthington's in Texas Killing Fields which is seeing limited release on October 14th, wrapped up work on the Australian surf film Drift, and has completed Clash of the Titans 2.
